The customer’s development team was struggling with poor quality of application releases. Without a proper build and release cycle, they were unable to identify critical bugs before the release. This led to a high turnaround time and significant rework to fix the bugs. A fallout of this was an eventual feature deprecation. The infrastructure was unreliable without a stringent process to monitor assets and obtain performance feedback. The team dealt with incessant downtimes, all of which resulted in constant firefighting and low morale.
Automating the CI/CD process removed the manual, error-prone deployments and improved the quality of the release cycles for our customer. Managing the Elastic clusters was easier for the development teams. There were near-real-time insights into the platform usage that helped the team quickly turn around issues. The team also saved significant operational time for administrative functions such as monitoring, failure recovery, and patching with the Amazon Elasticsearch Service. The overall cost saving was around 40%.
The CloudifyOps team implemented the CI/CD process for the customer and adapted it for smaller releases using Jenkins. This brought down the high level of deployment failures and feedback time. The customer development teams were able to look into issues on time. Another significant improvement was re-architecting the customer’s current architecture to microservices. Microservices enable the team to release individual services rather than the entire stack, which
brings in unnecessary security and quality risks. The CloudifyOps team recommended using AWS Elasticsearch Service with other ELK Stack components as an endpoint for better infrastructure and application monitoring and reporting. Custom alerts for programmers, site reliability engineers, and management were set up by
integrating with Kibana. An out-of-the-box anomaly detection from AWS Elasticsearch provided the data and events that contributed to an anomaly, making it easy for the customer’s teams to mitigate the anomalies immediately and reduce risks.
