Our customer had increasing costs for their cloud resources. The cost accumulation was not noticeable with each charge being very small. Over-retention of backups, ingress and egress charges of microservices, and unused static IP addresses were among the factors that added up over time and led to inflated overall cloud costs. One month, a development engineer had spun up a huge Compute engine and database but forgot to turn it off. The costs for the Google Compute engine and database were naturally higher than normal.
The CloudifyOps team recommended our customer export their cloud billing data to BigQuery for a detailed analysis of the usage, cost estimate, pricing data, and more. Looker Studio, an in-house GCP tool, was leveraged to visualize the data on custom dashboards. This helped the team to forecast various metrics such as the breakdown of monthly costs, resource metrics, cost history by month and product categories, etc.
The customer was able to maximize efficiency and prevent unexpected budget overruns by leveraging Google Cloud Platform (GCP) cost management tools. More than 25% of their Google Cloud cost was saved by integrating with BigQuery analytics. The customer also obtained insights to improve their products and services, increase customer engagement and revenue, and improve their position in the healthcare product market.
