Cloud Computing Unleashed: Navigating the Evolving Cloud Landscape in 2024

2023 was the year of Artificial Intelligence (AI). With ChatGPT quickly capturing people’s attention and rivals Google and Microsoft launching their versions of AI chatbots, what caught everyone by surprise was how easily we could be fooled by AI-generated images. Concerns were raised about the risks associated with AI but it did not appear to slow down the speed with which companies were training their AI models. A big fallout of AI was in the education sector with academic institutions trying to identify student submissions based on AI and those that weren’t. Understanding how AI works and where it is used is important for everyone going forward.

How did cloud technology perform in 2023?

DataOpscontinued to gain prominence with businesses aiming to streamline their data pipelines, increasing their reliability and agility. Automating the data lifecycle to improve its quality, managing data security, and enhancing data analytics for maximum value remained among the top focus areas of businesses.

Cloud cost optimization or FinOps is as important now as it ever was. More businesses focused on FinOps to derive the maximum returns from their digital investments. From using IT infrastructure and services from different cloud service providers, organizations looked at getting the right services at the right prices. Managing costs as your digital infrastructure grows more complex and challenging with growing needs is essential.

Platform engineering remains relevant in the increasingly complex and distributed software development environment that businesses are adopting. Consolidating data about applications, services, and infrastructure in one place encourages consistency and efficiency and is critical in the long run for businesses adopting DevOps.

Hello, 2024!

AI for development teams is gaining momentum with GenAI and other forms of predictive AI assisting developers and engineers in designing, coding, and testing applications. Once perfected, this will significantly improve developer productivity and allow more focus on strategic initiatives.

Industry-focused cloud platforms will empower businesses to achieve their goals quicker with customized product offerings and capabilities with underlying SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS services, matching an industry’s specific needs. Gartner predicts more than 70% of enterprises will use Industry Cloud Platforms or ICPs by 2027, up from less than 15% this year.

Edge computing solutions will continue to grow and mature with the significant demand for applications with low latency and real-time processing. This enhanced performance requires efficient data management, processing at the network periphery, and decentralizing computation.

Security will always be paramount and a necessity in cloud computing. With businesses adopting multiple cloud services, it is critical to seamlessly integrate security across cloud environments and digital assets without compromising agility. Cloud-native security solutions will see more adoption in 2024.

Interestingly, the 2023 Global Cloud Ecosystem survey of executives conducted by MIT in partnership with Infosys Cobalt reveals that cloud investment is the foundation for technology development and operational efficiency. The survey results show two stages of cloud maturity globally: one where businesses adopt the cloud to achieve essential opex and capex cost reduction and a second stage where businesses associate cloud investments with a positive business value. Respondents indicate the two stages are converging quickly. We see an increasing number of businesses at the cloud adoption stage. Having a customized infrastructure that meets your business needs is critical to bridging the gap to getting maximum returns from digital investments.

2024 will be a year of innovation and increased efficiency in the cloud. As it continues to grow, the cloud will be the foundation for transformative technologies of the future.
