Migrating to AWS for scalability and lower CAPEX costs
ABOUT THE CUSTOMER

The customer is a dental equipment manufacturer and operates a chain of dental clinics in the USA. To align with their rapid expansion, they wanted to move data from local servers to the cloud and modernize their infrastructure. The customer wanted to ensure data from the local clinics and the manufacturing unit was backed up to the cloud.

THE CHALLENGE |

Significant amount of legacy data from ERP applications was stored in local servers at the manufacturing unit. To meet the expansion needs, this required an infrastructure upgrade. The teams faced the challenge of securing and maintaining the additional infrastructure, and ensuring efficiency and compatibility with the latest technologies.
Local data storage for compliance: In compliance with government regulations, the clinics maintained data locally. The data could not be entirely moved out of the local servers. The risk of losing critical and sensitive information in case of a server failure was considerably high.

THE SOLUTION |

Strategic Solutions:

  • The CloudifyOps team recommended a SAP HANA ecosystem that met the customer requirements of a high-performance, low-cost system. We migrated the applications to the AWS cloud with minimal downtime.
  • Optimizing Performance: The CloudifyOps team leveraged AWS services and features to optimize the performance of the SAP HANA ecosystem. AWS Direct Connect established a low- latency, high-bandwidth connectivity between on-premises data centers and the AWS cloud. Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) distributed incoming traffic and ensured high availability of cloud resources.
  • High Availability and Disaster Recovery: We implemented disaster recovery solutions on AWS for business continuity. By deploying the customer applications to multiple AWS availability zones, the applications were automatically replicated for failover protection. AWS Backup and AWS CloudFormation were used for backup and recovery automation.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Low latency: The time taken to access the ERP and SAP applications from the manufacturing unit and the sales personnel remotely. There was also a reduction in response time and an increase in application availability or uptime.
  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) compliance for the clinical data.
  • Minimal downtime while migrating the applications to the AWS cloud.
BENEFITS DELIVERED |

Savings of up to USD20,000 – The IT systems of the manufacturing unit were due for an upgrade. By moving to the AWS cloud (an OpEx model), the customer saved a significant amount of money.

Consistent and better performance – We achieved optimal and consistent performance with right- sized instances and isolating the application middleware and front-end components.

Backup restoration time reduced by 35% – Timed restoration exercises were performed as part of the Disaster Recovery plan. The time taken to restore to the last best state was 3 hours, a third of the time taken earlier. Clinical data was backed up folder-wise through a customized solution that facilitated data restoration to the required restore point following a failure.
